Giant Tortoises

A Giant tortoise with saddle-type carapace. Darwin described this type of tortoise as having "...shells in front thick and turned up like a Spanish saddle." This is a classic example of adaptation to varying environments. The saddle type of shell allows tortoises to lift their heads high so they can reach the pads on the tall opuntia cactus.
