The Pichincha volcano was the site of an important battle in the war of independence from Spain. General Antonio José de Sucre led the forces that defeated the Spanish colonial army on the slopes of the volcano in 1822. The Battle of Pichincha was a critical turning point that resulted in the independence of the territories in what is now Ecuador.
