A local Guayaquileño told me that the iguanas have always been there, long before the city existed. They frequented the mangroves and willow groves that lined the banks of the Guayas River, an ideal habitat where they could find plenty of food. Over time, the city of Guayaquil grew up around them, and they never felt any reason to leave.
